Discovering what love is one day at a time
Do you ever think about the Scripture that says that we are to be rooted and grounded in love? A root is a means of anchorage and support, it’s something that is an origin or source, it is the essential core (the heart of), and it synonymously is a fountain, wellspring, and seedbed. The picture of a tree root grounded in the Love of Christ…is a beautiful picture. The Bible likens a person whose hope and trust are in the LORD to a tree: For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will not fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, And will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit.
It is a picture of a tree that has a good root system, one that has a system that anchors it and gives it stability. It provides it with nourishment, and is the place that growth originates from. Healthy trees have a root system that goes out from it around its circumference. They spread out and down from the tree in all directions. It makes me thing about the depth and breadth of the love of Christ. He hedges us in behind and before. Before a thought is on my tongue He knows it altogether. Trees that have healthy roots are not plagued by disease…Disease for a follower of Christ can start simply with fear…it is like a fungus to a tree. Fear is detrimental to our health. It causes us to not actively root ourselves in Christ, it stunts our root growth. It can cause our spiritual growth, our emotional and social growth to cease or be stunted. Fear comes in many forms…We need to face our fears head on and walk through them. Fears are virtual realities created by emotions left unchecked, emotions not dealt with in the light of God’s Word. (Fungus Amongus ) Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Fear keeps you bound. It leads you away from love; from Christ’s love. If we are not getting our love from the Wellspring, we will not be able to bear good healthy fruit, we will not be well anchored, and we may spread disease, like a tree with a fungus. But one who is rooted and grounded…in the Wellspring out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. He will be grounded in Truth. His life will be evidence of one whose source is The Source. His words will be filled with The Authority of The One who gives it. May we be a people whose trust and hope is in the LORD. May we be a people who are not only hearers of His Word, but that we would be BELIEVERS that are DOERS of His Word.
