Discovering what love is one day at a time
Have you ever shined a flashlight to find your way in the dark…or turned on a light in a room that was pitch black…to find that someone was in there…and they were not happy to have you turn on the light…in fact their response was not pleasing to the ear? Have you ever been the recipient of the flashlight in the eye…or the overhead light while you were sleeping? I have never heard when I am sleeping,”Hey, can I turn the light on?” So you can relate? Truth is intrusive like a flashlight in the eye, or an overhead light in the dark. The person receiving the truth…may not always be willing to hear…or be as excited as you are to find them…or to actually see the shadows they are creating. Darkness does not invite the light…it hides in the shadows. Light invites itself…it intrudes upon darkness. It seizes it and overcomes darkness…It is intentional. Light goes into the dark places not to overpower and cause pain, yet light moves toward the darkness out of love… A Love that is unwilling to leave you where you are...in the condition you are in. The love is intrusive…it divides light from darkness…It creates a division. It enables a choice….It provides the grace to stay in the darkness or travel the distance into the light. Christ is light and in Him there is no darkness at all. As a people who say we are lovers of God, we are to keep ourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. We are to have compassion on some, making a distinction, but others save with fear...pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh. If we say we love God, and are following Christ…then the attitude that shadows…sin…darkness in our lives is “ok.” …is a problem… We have been clothed in His righteousness…anything else should be repulsive to us. The picture of the flashlight or the overhead light in the room… is like the light seizing the darkness…like pulling or seizing someone from a dangerous fire. Leaving someone to die burning in a fire, is not loving them….Nor is it loving Christ or staying in His love. Out of love and reverence for Jesus, we love our neighbor as we love ourselves. It can be messy. Its messy because sin is messy. Relationships can be messy. It is not always easy…but it is what we have been called to. But the truth of all of this is that on the side where the light exposes the darkness…and the darkness flees…There is Freedom. There is Hope. There is Restoration. There is Healing. There is Life! What a privilege that He has called us to be witness of this Love. What a privilege that we get to be parts of the receiving end of this Love, and we get the privilege of serving each other in this Love!
