Discovering what love is one day at a time
Have you ever come home with your stomach grumbling and your body telling you that you have waited too long to eat? There is a great temptation there to grab the first thing that your eyes find…the most convenient or eye pleasing treat. Yet, we all know that some foods are better than others when it comes to satisfying not only our hunger but our body’s need for sustenance. It’s in that moment of decision where we can see what we have set as our decision maker. Feed my flesh or feed my body. Certainly we can choose to live either way. Each has benefits. One way is short term the other longer term.
Spiritually speaking, we can choose to feed our flesh, or feed our soul. There is a verse in Matthew that says, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.” So as we hunger for His righteousness, we set His Word above all of our circumstances. We choose to place His way of thinking over our own; although we know what our flesh desires, He knows what our soul needs. Truth is we are weak. Our own fleshly desires can lead us astray. God’s Word tells us to be sober, be vigilant: because our adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith… Just because we do not feel like doing the right thing…or just because we feel like doing the wrong thing doesn’t mean we should. When we have put our faith in Christ, He lives in us. His power is made perfect in our weakness, and healthy God given desires are attainable, because we CAN do all things through Christ who strengthens us. It is so important for us to think about our thinking. So often we make choices and truly those choices are opposite of what we have said we believe. How hypocritical is it for us if our YES is not a YES and our NO, not a NO? No more excuses… We have to be committed to Christ. Excuses are our way of covering our own will that we will not die to. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God for it is not subject to the law of God nor indeed can be. So then those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him, who raised Christ Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit that dwells in you. Therefore brethren, we are debtors-not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God. Romans 8:5-14 Because of Christ we no longer have to live addicted, angry, unforgiving, jealous, impatient, greedy, despairing, or in bondage to sin in any way. May we all truly humble ourselves before our Creator, pursue His righteousness with the wholeness of our being, and satisfy our hunger and thirst with His goodness.
