Discovering what love is one day at a time
Last summer, I was playing cards with my neighbor at the dining room table when out of the corner of my eye I spotted a small moving object crossing my kitchen floor. The look of alarm on my face must have been enough for my neighbor, for when I returned my eyes to the table she was up on her chair in a squatting position. Her arms were tucked in tight and she quickly breathed out in a hushed whisper-yell, “WHAT IS IT?” I told her I wasn’t quite sure and grabbed a slipper to defend myself. “You are NOT going to get whatever it is with THAT are you?” I told her I was thinking so… The look on her face told me, I better look for something else. When I returned with the broom, dustpan and a Wal-Mart bag the critter had already climbed up into my new patio door curtains. I shook the curtains and it fell to its death on my kitchen floor, with a motionless thud.
I called my son with the voice every mother uses when there is a spider, or any other critter in the house that you do not want to touch, and he came to my rescue. Before it died, it moved in a kangaroo-hopping like motion. It also had a pointy nose; we decided it must then be a baby shrew. We also discovered that the patio door had been open for over two hours…nice. Wonder how many other critters found a place to dwell in my home? A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls. There are things in each of our lives that personally we need to say no to. If we leave the door open, whether it is wide open, or even just a little crack; we open our spirit up to a whole lot of unwelcome critters.
